December has proved darkly depressing, with little of the magical in evidence - but hey, lighten up! We've left the longest night behind us once again and the spiral to warmer, brighter times has recommenced: 2020 ahoy!
"The sun sets - the sun also rises." |
Money Tree
Bury this tarnished golden seed
two feet down in the dung-pit
of greed - and cover your traces.
Sit tight with poker faces
while the vagaries of a sub-prime
climate do their nefarious worst
to sprout you a handsome harvest.
The best of it is, when the time
is ripe in the wake of delusional storms,
all you need do, to double your gains,
is hedge your bets, let a well-worked lie
or two leak onto the killing floor,
then reap the rewards of your sting.
You brassholes, with practised evasion,
will surely sidestep all accountability
while we duffers who fall for the smokescreens
you've crafted, be it that shadow
of a smoking gun or the phantom grail
of getting Brexit done, are royally shafted.
You might deny that it exists,
but your magic money tree never fails,
its roots and branches everywhere,
and though regulators will ineffectually rail
afresh on each regrettable occasion
the sombre truth is this: you get obscenely richer
and the have-nots grow the poorer, even while
being expected to bail out or foot the bill
for those lies you told, those lives you've ruined
and all those enterprises you have killed
in your selfish pursuit of such glittering fruit.
That's them told! Thanks for reading. With all best wishes for a Happy New Year, S ;-)

'Brassholes' - excellent. Top neology that! (LOL)
I don't know what you expect Steve. Do without money? Go back to trading with shells?
A very Happy New Year from Downunderland to the bard of Blackpool. As our wonderful Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) once said: "I hope virtue brings its own reward/ And I hope the pen is mightier than any sword."
All power to your pen! Keep voicing the unacceptable truth :)
That knocks I had a little nut tree into a cocked hat!
Thanks guys :-)
Martin, I guess my point is that as the financial world becomes even more abstract - with organised cartels manipulating 'world news' to leverage percentage points on e.g. futures trading - the very wealthy few are cynically gambling at our expense in ways beyond our comprehension or control.
Another fab poem Steve. Happy New Year.
Money Tree - I love it (and the beautiful photograph). Happy New Year!
What a wonderful tirade to see out the rotten old year. Let's hope for better in 2020.
Yes, that's pointed and powerful poetry. Keep rockin' in the New Year.
Well said Steve. Happy New Year and thanks for all the blogs.
Brilliant - sadly true.
That's another cracker of a poetical broadside. I love the cumulative effect. Happy New Year to you.
I love that poem! 👍
Great poem. Not the Tories 'magic money tree' then but something far more sinister.
Indeed KW, though the likes of Rees-Mogg and Tory cronies have profited hugely from all the financial uncertainty triggered by the Brexit fiasco (as has Nigel Farage incidentally).
Another fine poem Steve. Happy New Year to you - may it turn out better than any of us expect!
Thanks for sharing this Steve. I've enjoyed reading your blogs over the last few months. You have a very literary touch. I like your latest satirical Money Tree poem. Happy New Year to you.
Amen to brighter times Mr R. Loving both the photograph (a bit like stained glass) and the poetry.
That's a fine poem Steve - and if you've not read it, check out Oliver Bullough's book 'Moneyland' for his forensic insight into how oligarchs and cartels now manipulate world financial markets seemingly above the reach of international law.
Nailed it Steve and I can't believe that quite a few readers have ticked the funny box!
Love that poem - some great lines there. Well done :)
Excellent 👍👍👍
Keep the blogs coming Steve. You never short-change us - your efforts are appreciated. Happy New Year.
I enjoyed your poem very much but strangely it left me wondering where the expression 'foot the bill' comes from. Anybody know?
Wonderful poetry.
